Eighteen

After being dismissed, I headed over to the infirmary to check on Faith. When I arrived, I saw that it was quite busy. I saw and heard many apprentices in pain. Arms were bent in ways they shouldn’t be. I found Faith deep in the infirmary. Her eyes were closed, but face showing pain. I grabbed a chair and sat next to her. I grabbed her hand, holding it tightly.

“I’m going to make him pay,” I said after a couple of minutes of silence. “He is not going to get away with what he did to you.”

“Be careful with that mentality my young apprentice.”

I looked over to the side to see Master Griffonhowl.

“What do you mean Master?”

“You are full of anger and rage for what happened to your friend. Going into a fight like that can be deadly. It will cloud your judgment, leading to risks you would normally not take.”

“Did you even see what he did to her?”

“Yes I did Trez,” Master Griffonhowl said with a calm voice. “Apprentice Mareis was brutal to your friend, but he is actually terrified of you.”

“Scared of me?”

“Yes,” Master Griffonhowl said as he stepped forward and placed a hand on my shoulder. The way you easily blocked his strike was foreign to him. He must not be used to someone equal in strength. Let alone someone your size.”

“Why is someone like him allowed to even be here?”

“He may be cruel, but he has the strength and the ability to go far as a great warrior. We may be at peace, but you saw how things in Shiftron are currently. If war breaks out someone like Mareis will be helpful. There have been many like Mareis to enter the Temple. Some have been dismissed, to become nothing but criminals like Xanto. Others change once they get their own master. A few of those on the Aeon Council was like Mareis when they first started training. Their masters helped to get rid of that nature.”

“It is still hard to believe he could even be here. He toyed with Faith,” I said placing my other hand on hers. “I understand not to let my anger take over Master, but I will do what I can to beat him.”

“I know you will. You have only been training for a short time, but you are the one here with the most talent as well as the best potential to be an Aeon. You have grasped your katana with ease, and the forms used are that of an apprentice years ahead of your time. I know you want to face Mareis, but if something happens before the finals do not hesitate to tap out. I don’t want you to be too injured in a simple sparring match.”

“I will do what I can Master. I don’t know if it comes to that if my opponent will even let me tap out,” I said staring at Faith. “Many of those in preliminaries said that I was cheating as I already had a master.
